Volunteer Opportunities - Malaysia

There are numerous organizations looking for volunteer workers in Malaysia. The assignments are varied and extremely rewarding (teaching refugees, working in conservation, administrative work, health…). In general the main requirements are the age (18 years or older) and commitment (availability to work for at least 3 months). Some might require residence status (having an address in Malaysia). Volunteer assignments can be a great opportunity for expatriates and tourists to give back to society!

Ambiance Home Accessories and Furniture - Kuala Lumpur - Malaysia

Ambiance is a great shop to buy Asian themed furniture and home accessories. There are several shops in Kuala Lumpur (Ampang, Mont Kiara 1 Shopping Mall, Bangsar Shopping BSC).
They also have a show room in Damansara Heights that opens twice a week (Thursday’s and Saturdays). A visit to the showroom is a great opportunity to visit a local bungalow house and assess how the furniture looks on a house. They have amazing pieces at very fair prices!

Jump Street Trampoline Park -Petaling Jaya - Kuala Lumpur - Malaysia

“Jump Street trampoline park is an amazing urban playground for adults and children alike, with hundreds of interconnected trampolines from the floor right up the walls.”

Their statement is totally correct! I’ve been there recently – in Petaling Jaya, Kuala Lumpur - for a kids birthday party and even dare to say that adults have as much (or even more) fun than the kids.

The park is extremely well organized, you attend during one hour slots and are guided around on a variety of trampolines. The foam trampoline where you can literally disappear, the basketball trampoline (aim at the basket while jumping), the dodge the ball trampoline among others. This trampoline park also has aerobics classes on trampolines (weekdays).

The Juara Turtle Project - Juara - Pulau Tioman

A visit to the Juara Turtle Project in Juara, Pulau Tioman is a great family activity. You are greeted by a volunteer who explains how they work towards turtle conservation. One also learns about the challenges they face mostly with turtle poachers and sea pollution. The project is small but it provides a lot of information, a guided tour and a meet and greet with Turtle Jo.

1511 Coconut Grove - Juara - Pulau Tioman - Malaysia

1511 Coconut Grove in Juara Pulau Tioman is by far the best accommodation in Juara! The bungalows are brand new extremely clean, the service is above average for Pulau Tioman and the location is very beautiful.

The beach is stunning and in the monsoon months great for surf lovers. It’s quite isolated though so ideal for those looking for a tranquil vacation.

Riverview Juara - Pulau Tioman - Malaysia

Riverview Juara in Tioman was a very pleasant surprise! The accommodation (beach and river chalets) is extremely basic but very clean. Julie and the entire team go the extra mile to provide valuable information and guarantee a smooth stay to all their guests. It’s location on the beach and near the river is absolutely stunning! It’s also a beautiful child friendly place. Riverview Juara is a good place to disconnect from the world (even though wireless is available in the common areas)! Even though it’s very basic, (no hot showers for example) it’s totally worth visiting due to the stunning location, friendliness of the staff, cleanness and tranquillity!

Pulau Tioman

Pulau Tioman is an island off the east coast of Malaysia. With an impressive landscape, high mountains, jungle, several rivers and with breath-taking waterfalls its worth to visit for those living in the country. Given the choice between Pulau Tioman and The Perhentian Islands I would select the Perhentian. The snorkelling is more impressive and the beaches are cleaner. For those with a lot of free time, looking for a laidback vacation, Tioman can be a good option! The boat trip from Mersing to Tioman takes circa 1h30 minutes and there’s no shortage of accommodation and activities: http://www.tioman.com.my/
