Circa 1 hour and a half north of
Kuala Lumpur you’ll find the elephant sanctuary. The entrance is free – you can
give a donation - and as opposed to what is mentioned in some sites, you are
not required to book in advance. You must pay extra only if wish to have a bath
with the elephants.
The sanctuary opens at 14:00 and at
13:00 and 13:30 they show two movies about elephant conservation. Small kids
might find the movie impressive and ask a lot of questions. Once you are in you
can feed the elephants before the daily show. During the shown a group of elephants
show some skills and visitors learn a bit about their story. One of them was
attacked by a tiger and has no tale for example. After the show and a short
feeding session the elephants are given a bath in the nearby river. Some
visitors can bath the elephants but just for circa 5 minutes. This can be an
interesting activity for tourists and expatriates with small children visiting
Malaysia. Tourists and expatriates with elder kids and a limited number of vacation days might want to pass it.
